Breakaway is in Sea Ranch, Sonoma County, in the ocean meadow, overlooking white surf to the front and across 4.5 miles to Black Point. Sea Ranch is 5,500 acres of private development, 10 miles of ocean frontage, redwood forests and frontage on the Gualala River. It is known for its architecturally designed homes on large open spaces, a nature reserve, "Living lightly on the land". It is the northern most portion of Sonoma county along the ocean, just before Mendocino County, the Gualala River and the town of Gualala. It is 100 miles north of San Francisco on highway Rte 1, and 48 miles south of the town of Mendocino.
